By Staff | Jun 8, 2017

MINDY’S?MILES- The family-friendly bike ride will take place on Saturday, July 17 in West Bend. Registration is now open to anyone that wishes to participate. All cycling skill levels are welcome to participate. A BBQ will follow the bicycle ride.

On Saturday, June 17, Mindy’s Miles annual bike ride will take place to honor the memory of Mindy Bruellman and Chris Gearhart who were suddenly killed in August of 2008 in a car accident. The following summer, Mindy’s Miles was started by friends and family in order to remember those that have passed.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. in West Bend at the Grotto Park. The ride will begin at 9:00 a.m. The bicycle ride is for all skill levels, and it is not a race. The purpose of the ride is to enjoy the wonderful scenery that Northern Iowa has to offer while surrounded by family and friends.

Mindy was a successful organ donor, and this year’s bike ride is dedicated to Penny, the woman that received Mindy’s heart. Because of Mindy, Penny was given eight more years of life and the opportunity to meet a grandchild. Penny participated in eight Mindy’s Miles before passing.

There are three routes that participants can choose from: a small route (approx. 20 miles), a medium route (approx. 30 miles), and a long route (approx. 45 miles). Food and beverage stations are available on each route. A shuttle bus is provided for riders that do not wish to complete the route.

West Bend’s 4-H group offers events for children from 9 a.m- 1 p.m. Activities include a bike ride around West Bend, arts and crafts, and a bouncy house. Activities are FREE for children that wish to participate.

There is a “bring your own beverage” barbecue for all participants following the bike ride starting at 11 a.m. The barbecue is open to non-riders with a free-will donation. T-shirts are also available for purchase by non-riders.

There is a fee to register for Mindy’s Miles. Registration includes: a Mindy’s Miles T-shirt, food and beverage stops along the bike routes, Sag Wagon service, and barbecue (BYOB). All proceeds go towards Mindy’s Miles of Smiles bike giveaway and other organizations to be chosen.

Last year, Mindy’s Mile of Smiles bike giveaway gave 35 bikes to adults and children that had been nominated throughout the year. Proceeds are also donated to West Bend- Mallard School’s summer lunch program and to families in crisis or that have lost children.

Over 325 riders of all skill levels are expected to participate this year.
