Keep ‘Em Brewing Winners Announced
KEMB-LP’s First Keep’Em Brewing Home Brew Competition was termed a success by organizers of the event last Saturday. A total of 20 entries were judged in the home brew competition by judges from the American Homebrewers Association’s Beer Judge Certification Program at the VFW?in Emmetsburg.
In the category of Amber and Brown Ales, there were thee entries. First Place was awarded to Jackie Lee Skinner of Ruthven, with second place going to the entry of Tom Hovick of Ceylon, MN and third place to Steve Pelzer of Emmetsburg.
For the Amber Lager category, there were two entries, with Tom Hovick of Ceylon, MN having his entry selected as the top brew. Second place went to the team of Dru and Dale Zimmerman and Tyler Metzger, all of Whittemore.
Class Three, Belgian and French brews, attracted two entries, with Matt Greinert and Mike Blocker of Fenton being named the champions, with second place going to Tom Hovick of Ceylon, MN.
The Pale Ales and IPA’s attracted five entries. First place went to Steve Pelzer of Emmetsburg, with second and third place honors both going to Matt Greinert and Mike Blocker of Fenton.
There were three entries in the Specialty Beers, class, with first place going to Jackie Lee Skinner of Ruthven. Jackie Lee Skinner and Scott Williams of Ruthven were awarded second place and third place went to Steve Pelzer of Emmetsburg.
There were two entries in the Stouts and Porters class, with Mike Blocker and Matt Greinert of Fenton earning first place and John Bradford and Dave Radke of Lincoln, NE, earning second place honors.
The entry of Tom Hovick of Ceylon, MN, earned the top honor in the Strong or Imported Beers class and in the Meads class, Sean Johnson of Spencer took the top honors with his entry, while Dru and Dale Zimmerman and Tyler Metzger of Whittemore placed second.
In the Best of Show judging, the entry of Matt Greiner and Mike Blocker of Fenton from the Category Three Belgian and French Beers was selected as the overall top brew. The entry was called Belgian Quad, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale.
Runner up honors went to Sean Johnson of Spencer with his Meads entry, a Melomel Mead called Cherry Berry Melomel.
For the People’s Choice award in the public tasting event at the Palo Alto County Fairgrounds Saturday afternoon, Darren Hasbrouck of Emmetsburg was the champion, with Steve Pelzer of Emmetsburg the runner-up.
