Graettinger Readies For 120th Annual Labor Day Celebration

The community of Graettinger is gearing up for this weekend’s 120 th Annual Labor Day Celebration with a slate full of activities for one and all. Iowa’s Oldest Continuous Labor Day Celebration gets underway Saturday, Sept. 3 and concludes Monday evening, Sept. 5 with something for everyone.

Saturday, Sept 3

The celebration starts bright and early on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. with the tee off of the first of two days of the Men’s Golf tournament at the Hillcrest Golf Course, along with the start of citywide garage sales. A bake sale and coffee will start at 8:30 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church and entry of items for the annual FFA Grain and Flower Show will get underway at 9 a.m. downtown.

Also beginning in Citizen’s Memorial Park at 9 a.m. will be the Co-Ed Softball Tournament, which will run all day Saturday and continue on Sunday. The Tournament is being sponsored by Jake Ebel. Also beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing until 4 p.m. will be a dunk tank to benefit the Paws and Effect initiative, in Citizens Park, sponsored by Denny Clabaugh trucking.

At Noon, Bingo, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters, will open and continue daily to 10 p.m. in the former Happy Hour building on Main Street. The popular bean-bag tournament will get underway at 1p.m. in Citizens Memorial Park and the McDermott Family Shows carnival rides and attractions will open at 1 p.m. and operate to 10 p.m. nightly.

Human Foosball will take place at 3 p.m. in Citizens’ Park and at 5 p.m. on Main Street in front of Bank Plus, the first of three Bicycle Giveaways will take place.

Entertainment will begin at 6 p.m. at the Side Street lounge featuring Big Nacho entertainment until 9 p.m. and the Sons of the American Legion will host a Pork Chop on a Stick at the Legion starting at 8 p.m., which will lead into the Annual Street Dance, sponsored by the Labor Day Committee, on Main Street, complete with beer garden and music by Farm Rock, starting at 9 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 4

Sunday’s activities start with day two of the Men’s Golf Tournament at the Hillcrest starting at 8 a.m. The annual Graettinger Firemen’s Pancake Breakfast at the Fire Hall also gets underway at 8 a.m. and serves through 12 noon.

The Co-Ed Softball Tournament will continue at Citizen’s Memorial Park at 9 a.m., along with the FFA Grain and Flower Show.

Another favorite, the Labor Day Antique Tractor Pull and Hot Rod Lawn Mower pull will begin at the Pro Coop property at 11 a.m. and a sand volleyball tournament will start at 11 a.m. at Citizens’ Memorial Park.

Also starting at 11 a.m. on Sunday will be a craft show in the Graettinger Senior Center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Graettinger-Terril FFA will sponsor its annual Fun Day events for kids at Fahnestock Park starting at 11 a.m. Sunday.

At Noon, Bingo, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters, will open and continue daily to 10 p.m. in the former Happy Hour building on Main Street. In the afternoon, McDermott Family Shows will begin operation at 1 p.m.

A new event, a Poker Run, will get underway at 1 p.m. Sunday and at 3 p.m., the Side Street Lounge will host a free Rib and Pulled Pork feed, featuring musical entertainment by Big Nacho.

The second of three bicycle giveaways will take place at 3:30 p.m. on South Washington Street by Shaver Manufacturing before the Bed Races, which will get underway at 4 p.m. on South Washington Street.

Capping off Sunday’s events will be the annual Labor Day Variety Show and coronation of Miss Graettinger. The program begins at 7 p.m. at the Graettinger-Terril High School gym. During the program, the Labor Day Grand Marshals, Jeff and Lori Buechler, will also be introduced prior to the crowning of Miss Graettinger.

Monday, Sept. 5

Labor Day Monday will begin with the 5K Run/Walk, starting at 8 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church. The Sporting Clays trapshooting event will begin at 8 a.m. on the east edge of town and the American Legion Kids Races start at 9 a.m. at Fahnestock Park.

The FFA Flower and Grain Show will open for the day at 9 a.m. and Bingo will be offered from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the former Happy Hour building.

The Annual Labor Day Turkey Dinner at the United Methodist Church will serve from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Starting at 11 a.m., the Craft Show will open at the Senior Citizens Center on Main Street and at 1 p.m., the McDermott Family Shows will begin operations again.

The highlight of the afternoon, the annual Labor Day Parade will start at Evergreen Park and make its way uptown beginning at 1:45 p.m.

Following the parade, Bingo will resume at the Happy Hour building at 3 p.m. until 8 p.m.

The Fun and Games competition will start at 4 p.m. in Fahnestock Park and at 5 p.m., the final Bicycle drawing will take place in front of Bank Plus downtown. Also, prize giveaways will take place at the Side Street Saloon, starting at 5 p.m.

Graettinger’s celebration of Labor Day will conclude Monday evening with the drawings for the Grand Prize raffles on Main Street at 7 p.m.
