“Only An Orphan Girl” will come to the stage of Emmetsburg Main Street Community Theatre in November. Auditions for this hilarious old-time melodrama are Tuesday, Sept. 6, and Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. at the performance center of the theatre, located at 19th and Lake Streets.

Cast for this soul-stirring drama of human trial and tribulations calls for eight characters, five women and three men: the villain, the evil Arthur Rutherford; the heroine, Nellie, his long-lost brother’s orphan daughter; and the hero, Dick Perkins. The female roles include a 10-year-old girl, Lucy.

“Emmetsburg Main Street Community Theatre hasn’t presented a melodrama since the 1980 production of ‘The Drunkard’,” said director Jackie VanOosbree.”‘Only an Orphan Girl’ written by Henning Nelms, is hilarious.”

The villain tries four different times, using four different methods, to end Nellie’s life. He wants her inheritance. He is foiled at the last moment every time by the hero, Dick Perkins. The nick-of-time rescues are characteristic of old-time melodramas.

Over-the-top acting and movement are the norm and the audience is encouraged to cheer on the good guys and heckle the villain. The audience can even show their displeasure by tossing things at the actors.

“Melodramas also historically include entertainment between acts,” said the director. “Main Street will need a Master of Ceremonies and performers such as singers, magicians, and dancers/tumblers. All ages are encouraged to participate in the talent section.”

Production dates are Nov. 11, 12 and 13, and Nov. 18, 19 and 20. There will be refreshments served during the show. This is old-fashioned family entertainment.
