VFW #2295 Hosts First Veterans Recognition Dinner On Friday
A Salute to Veterans will be held in conjunction with a fundraiser this Friday, Aug. 5, at VFW Post #2295, Emmetsburg. Veterans from the Vietnam War will be honored during the evening, in addition to veterans of all recent armed conflicts. Men and women of Palo Alto County who are joining the military will be recognized as well.
The evening begins with bidding on Silent Auction items. The public is invited to submit bid, starting at 4 p.m. A wide range of items have been donated. Bid on an Army flag, a Navy flag, clothing items and gift cards from a number of local businesses, as well as many other items. Bids will be accepted until 6 p.m.
A meal, with roast hog and all the trimmings (baked beans, coleslaw, chips and dessert) on the menu, will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A cash bar will be available.
“We are looking forward to seeing and serving a lot of people. In fact, we are hoping to serve 300,” said Dennis Mandsager, VFW member and co-chair of the event. “Everyone is welcome and there is no charge for participating in this event. However, free will donations are accepted.”
Guest Speaker Col. Robert King
A formal program will be held at 6:30 p.m. Guest speaker is retired Colonel Robert King, Iowa National Guard.
Col. Robert King is the Executive Director, Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs Director, Iowa Veterans Cemetery. He served in the Iowa National Guard for nearly 36 years prior to his Sept. 2004 retirement. During his last 15 years of service he was a familiar face to many Iowans as the National Guard’s public affairs officer.
King has been involved for many years in coordinating the Veterans’ Day Parade at the Iowa State Fair.
At the Friday night dinner in Emmetsburg, Col. King will join VFW members in honoring veterans of all wars and current military service members.
Chamber Coffee Host
Members of the VFW will host the Chamber Coffee on Friday morning, Aug. 5. Anyone who would like to view the many items for the silent auction is welcome to attend the coffee between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. at the VFW Post Home.
