Country School In Session During 2016 Palo Alto County Fair
The Country School at the Palo Alto County Fairgrounds will be in session July 21-24 during the 2016 Palo Alto County Fair. Everyone is invited to get a glimpse into the past of the one room country school from the early 1900s. The classroom will be open from 1 to 5 p.m.
One of the highlights of the sessions will be a time of reminiscing with Helen Augustine and Mary Blake as they share their memories of their country school days on Thursday, July 21 at 4 p.m. Prior to that, at 1 p.m. Thursday, the Iowa Egg Council will present Egg Education. Friday at 12 noon, the 4-H Educational Presentations will be given. Come join the fun!
“We are so grateful for grants in 2015 and 2016 from the Palo Alto County Gaming Development Corporation that allowed us to restore the school by scraping, priming, and painting the siding of the school, repairing and painting the storm windows, and restoring the window sills inside the school,” said Country School Board members Arlet Johnson. “A new sign has been created to welcome you to the school.”
Trudy Huskamp Peterson, an archivist, formerly from Palo Alto County, and now Washington, D.C., has been helping preserve the books and papers that were in the school from the 1890s to 1950s. Trudy donated many storage boxes to preserve them and the grant has enabled the School Board to purchase more supplies to continue the presentations.
“We also have a wish to gather any photos from country school days in Palo Alto County and frame them for future generations to view,” said Johnson. “If you have some photos to share, please drop them off at the school during the fair, in a self addressed envelope. We will make copies and return the photos to you. Names of the township school and students in the picture would be helpful.”
A second wish is to welcome new members to the Country School Board. It would be wonderful to have more volunteers to join in and share new ideas for the school activities and restoration.
