Emmetsburg FFA Participates In District Contests

DISTRICT?COMPETITORS?- These members of the Emmetsburg FFA participated in various events and contests at the Northwest District Convention in March. The students were Nick Krieg, Kinsey Kogel, Alexis Louwagie, Betty Sue Strohman, Clayton Swanson, Zach Mason, Carter Hoffman, Nick Grandstaff, Nick Schany, Terry Wise, Chance Saathoff, Colton Whited, Ty Harson, Katie Hoffman, Jenna Chapman, Jade Schleisman, Bailee Garrelts, Olivia Hampe, Austin Bergstrom, WadeTravis, Nick Plantz, Grant Dietring, Will Schany and Advisor Mr. Steve Eskildsen. -- submitted photo

INWOOD – A total of 24 members of the Emmetsburg FFA attended and participated in the 2016 Northwest FFA District Convention, held Saturday, March 5 at West Lyon High School. Several Emmetsburg FFA?members earned high honors during the competitions at the event.

Members advancing from district contests included the Conduct of Meetings team which consisted of: Nick Krieg, Kinsey Kogel, Alexis Louwagie, Betty Strohman, Clayton Swanson, Zach Mason (sub), and Carter Hoffman.

Also advancing was Nick Grandstaff in Individual Ag Sales and Nick Schany in Creed Speaking.

Other members competing included: Terry Wise, Chance Saathoff and Colton Whited in the Ag Mechanics contest; all three received golds. Members welded, cut PVC pipe, calculated slope of shed truces and took a knowledge test over agriculture mechanics.

Ty Harson, Katie Hoffman, Jenna Chapman, Jade Schleisman, Bailee Garrelts and Olivia Hampe took the Farm Business Management Test, Ty received a gold, and the remainder received silver placings. The farm business management exam tests members on their ability to analyze farm and ranch business information, evaluate Ag business decisions and apply economic principles.

Austin Bergstrom, Wade Travis, and Nick Plantz took the chapter test, which test member’s on their knowledge of chapter operations. All three received silver placings.

The conduct of meetings team received 5th place of 8 team competing, receiving a first place silver.

Nick Schany received a first place silver, earning him 5th of 12 members competing.

Nick Grandstaff was alternate to state in Ag Sales, he placed 3rd of 9, receiving a gold.

In addition to FFA contests, Iowa Corn sponsored a quiz bowl, made up of teams from 12 Northwest Iowa schools. Members were tested on their knowledge of Iowa Ag statistics, agricultural facts and world agriculture knowledge. Emmetsburg would go on to win the quiz bowl by an astonishing 500 point lead. In addition to a plaque, Emmetsburg FFA also received $1000 award. Members on the quiz bowl team included: Ty Harson, Nick Grandstaff, Will Schany, Grant Deitering and Nick Schany.

There are 36 schools in the Northwest FFA District, which help make up the 226 FFA Chapters in the state of Iowa.
