4-H?Beef Weigh-ins are one of the first steps in preparation for the Palo Alto County Fair.

Approximately 29 exhibitors showed up for 4-H market beef weigh-ins that were held on Saturday, Jan. 2 at the Palo Alto County Fair Grounds in Emmetsburg. The weigh-ins included market steers, market heifers, and feeder pens for animals to be eligible to show at county and district fairs. Exhibit calves were required to be tagged at home prior to weigh-in.

In order to show at the Iowa State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben, 4-H calves must also go through a state verification process by having retinal images taken. With only one market beef exhibitor, Emma Anderson, planning to show at the Iowa State Fair, retinal imaging was scheduled to take place at the farm. These calves were not tagged ahead of time, but will be tagged at the time retinal imaging is done.

Beef Superintendent Brian Rouse, Extension Staff Member Julie Naig, along with numerous volunteers conducted the formal weigh-ins that give a market beef the eligibility to show.

As a reminder, all 4-H exhibitors will be verifying weigh-in information in 4HOnline, so everyone should have an “active status” at the time weigh-ins were completed.

The 2016 Palo Alto County Fair will be held July 21-24.
