Remembering Those Who Serve During The Holidays
The Emmetsburg High School Student Council, with assistance from VFW?Post 2295, recently completed a project to send holiday packages to U.S. troops deployed around the world over the holiday season.
Terry Chamberlain of the local VFW worked with EHS?Student Council Advisor Kelly Josephson and her student council members to obtain items for the packages, as well as packing the boxes and eventually mailing the packages from the Emmetsburg Post Office.
“In checking with the Iowa National Guard headquarters, we found out that currently there are no Iowa Guard members on active deployment,”?Chamberlain explained. “But, we identified the 185th Air Refueling Wing, based out of Sioux City, as the organization we would send our packages to.”
According to Chamberlain, the 185th plays an active role in ongoing military operations all over the globe, providing aerial refueling services to various missions. The 185th, based at the Sioux Gateway Airport, has units on temporary duty assignments in Europe, which are supporting various military operations in the region.
“The idea of packages for service members was a state-wide program supported by the Iowa Association of High School Student Councils,” Josephson explained. “We were very fortunate to have the support of the local VFW and Terry Chamberlain to help us do our part to support those who defend our nation and our freedoms.”
