Vietnam Vets Eligible For Honor Flights

By Staff | Dec 15, 2015

Having just completed its 11th successful Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight on Sept. 19, 2015, taking some 99 WWII and Korean War Veterans to our nation’s capital to visit their memorials, the organization is announcing its trips for 2016. Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight will have two flights in 2016 May 7th and September 17th.

Two major changes are being made. In the past, only World War II and Korean War Veterans were eligible to go. Now it will be opened to include the Vietnam War Veterans. Each flight will be an “All Veterans, WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War” Flight, as Veterans will be paired in teams of either two or four Veterans, with one Veteran acting as leader.

Veterans who have already applied to go on an Honor Flight and who have not previously gone on an Honor Flight as a veteran need not reapply as their applications will be kept on file. New applications were released on November 11 and must be accompanied by a copy of the DD214. All new applications will be made available from the county Veteran Affairs office or from any Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight Board member. As in the past, the Veterans will be chosen on a first come first served basis.

Currently recognized “wartime” periods are:

World War II.December 7, 1941 December 31, 1946

Korean WarJune 27, 1950 January 31, 1955

Vietnam War*August 5, 1964 May 7, 1975

*If a Veteran was in Vietnam between 02-28-1961 and

08-04-1964, the veteran is still considered wartime service.

Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight has taken Veterans from some 43 Iowa counties and some 154 Iowa communities and will continue to accept applications from all counties. As in the past, the veterans themselves do not pay for their flight; however, the Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight Board expects the counties in which the veterans live to financially support their veterans to go on this trip.

Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization.
