FIELD FIRE

By Staff | Oct 20, 2015

MASSIVE?FIELD?FIRE - Thursday’s extreme winds fanned a field fire shortly before 1 p.m. five miles west of Emmetsburg. Emmetsburg firefighters were first to respond to the blaze, which was pushed across Highways 18 and 4 into more standing corn. Firefighters from Graettinger and Ruthven were called for mutual aid assistance and with the help of several area farmers and implements, the fire was brought under control about an hour and a half later. No injuries were reported, but the dry conditions and wind gave a sobering demonstration of the fury of Mother Nature. An estimated 15 acres of standing corn were damaged or destroyed in the blaze. -- Dan Voigt photo
