Herkes Selected As Grand Marshals
s summer winds down, the city of Graettinger is gearing up for its annual revelry. Sept. 5 through Sept. 7 will mark the 118th year of the community’s Labor Day Celebration.
One of the families readying for the three days of festivities is that of Willard and Joan Herke.
“We are going to have a houseful,” commented Joan.
On Monday, Sept. 7, the couple will be leading the parade as the Grand Marshalls.
Both Willard and Joanne are graduates of Graettinger High School and have been married for 57 years. They raised four children on their farm east of town. During those years, the couple farmed the land and also raised hogs and cattle.
For 20 years Willard also owned a woodworking business in Graettinger, retiring nearly 10 years ago.
Joanne was a long time employee of the Graettinger School district, working in the school’s business office for twenty one years.
Over the years, the Herekes have been involved in the Graettinger community, serving on a number of boards and committees. The list includes the Community Club, Palo Alto County Pork Producers, the elevator co-op board, church council and the Valley View Cemetery Board.
Being golfers, Willard and Joan enjoy spending time at Hillcrest Golf Course during the summer months.
Reflecting on the honor of being chosen as the Grand Marshalls for the Labor Day Celebration, Joanne commented, “Graettinger is the most caring and wonderful community.”
