LAKE STREET PROJECT CONTINUES -- Work on the Lake Street project continues, with infrastructure going in at 7th intersecting with Broadway.
“From a physical construction standpoint, the underground work (water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer mains) is nearly complete in four of the project’s eight blocks,” according to Emmetsburg City Administrator John Bird. “However, no paving and no curb and gutter construction work has been completed. Beck Excavating, the general contractor on the project, will soon begin preparing the subgrade of the streets under which the water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer have been installed.”
Bird explained, “The reason for the long delay in finishing work in the 800 block of Palmer Street is the fact that numerous tests of the newly-installed water main failed. Whenever a new water main is installed, whether to replace an existing main or to serve an area not previously served, the main must be tested before being placed into service to ensure the conduit is sanitary. It is not uncommon for a small amount of foreign material (usually dirt or sand) to end up in a newly installed main and the presence of just a small amount of this foreign material can result in failed tests.”
To date, approximately 25% of the total cost of the project has been paid. --Jane Whitmore photo
