Bully Bullhead Celebration This Weekend

“Home is Where BBW Is!” is the theme for Bully Bullhead Weekend 2015 in Ruthven! This year’s annual celebration that features over 60 events for people 1 year to 101 years of age will be held on Friday, July 10, through Sunday, July 12. There are also two new events on the schedule this year. The new events include a teen dance on Friday night at the Ruthven Community Care Center campus at 7 p.m. and the Bean Bag Tournament at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the football field.

BBW kicks off on Friday morning with the BBW Tractor Ride beginning at 7 a.m. The ride will take off around Lost Island Lake and then take in our area lakes including Trumbull Lake, Elk Lake, and Silver Lake, returning to Ruthven around noon for lunch at Bully’s Bar and Grill. Just bring your tractor to the Care Center area around 7 on Friday morning and register then be ready to enjoy a scenic ride starting at 8 a.m.

Other Friday events include the 4 p.m. free community pork patty/hot dog feed, sponsored by the Iowa State Bank. The 2015 Citizen of the Year Presentation to take place at 5:40 p.m. with Jan Helmke being honored this year.

More Friday events include the 4th through 8th grades 3-on-3 basketball tournament and high school 3 on 3 tourney at Centennial Park & Pool and the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull at 6 p.m. near the Catholic Church.

Set the alarm clock on Saturday as things get going early with the BBW Fishing Contest at 7 a.m. Registration is at Bobber Down on the south edge of Ruthven. Six tagged bullheads have been released in Lost Island Lake and a $500 cash prize if you catch one! There are several other cash prizes as well and you must be registered. Other events include the city-wide garage sales, a bake sale at the Methodist Church, antique tractor and machinery show, mini doughnuts, history slide show and so much more!

The 5K, 10K and Fun Run event will be held at Huston Park on Lost Island Lake at 8 a.m. Other Saturday morning events include the Mason’s Turkey Fillet & Brat feed located on the green space of the Wild Wood Flower Gift Shop starting at 11 a.m. The Ruthven-Lost Island Railroad Express will also be giving free train rides for the kids.

At noon, the BBW Car Show kicks off at Cricket Park on Gowrie by the railroad tracks. Of course, one event everyone loves is the large parade. The BBW parade will start at 1:30 p.m. leaving from the south end of the football field and traveling the same parade route as years past.

After the parade, the Lost Island Nature Center will be hosting a family fun event that will be entertaining for everyone and the Pony Express will be giving pony rides near the American Legion at 3:30 p.m. The Bean Bag Tournament will begin at 3 p.m. at the football field area.

Going on from 3 to 7 p.m. at Centennial Park and Pool will be the WooWoo Wine-Fest, The event features wineries and a beer brewery as well as other vendors from around the region. Everyone 21 or older will truly enjoy wine and beer tasting while moseying around looking over crafts. There will also be things for kids to do and there will be live music as well. All ages are invited as the 4-H club will be selling water and Redline BBQ will be serving up some tasty food.

When evening comes around there will be the Ruthven Fireman’s Street Dance up town featuring the “Rudd Band.” And if a street dance isn’t your cup of tea there will be a large fireworks display shot off from the swimming beach of Lost Island Lake at 10p.m. truly something for everyone!

Sunday morning kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with the American Legion presenting their pancake, egg and sausage breakfast along with the Legion Auxiliary’s Bake Sale. The remainder of the morning is somewhat reserved so families may attend the church of their choice in Ruthven.

At 10 a.m. at the Bill Grange Trapshooting grounds, just a mile south of Ruthven, there will be the GT/RA Bulls Eye Trap Shooting competition will be held with four classes: youth female and male and adults male and female. All proceeds from this event will go to the high school trap team; the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Bullseyes.

The Co-Ed volleyball tournament kicks off at noon also at the softball fields.

At 1 p.m., the Progressive Organ Recital begins at Zion Lutheran Church, proceeding to each church in the community and finishing at the Lost Island Lutheran Church where there will be an ice cream social and maidrite supper at 4 until 7 p.m.

The pool will also be open during the afternoon next to the volleyball tournament. Never a dull moment in Ruthven during Bully Bullhead Weekend and this year’s event promises to be just as big and fun as last year’s event!
