Emmetsburg businesses are featured on a new kind of map, drawn through the eyes of Emmetsburg cartoonist Dave Carpenter.

“This new idea was created with the help of Dave Carpenter, our talented local artist that grew up in Emmetsburg,” said Dan McCain, General Manager of The Reporter & The Democrat. “Dave created a whimsical picture of Emmetsburg businesses and there is certainly a lot to look at.”

“This was a real challenge,” said Dave Carpenter. “I probably spent about 100 hours on this project.”

Talking about creating the map, Dave said his aim was to make the buildings as accurate as possible. He used a lot of pictures for reference, then added a little humor along the way.

“Everyone was given the opportunity to be featured on the map and we were happy with the participation,” said McCain. “If, at some point, we would do it again, I could see many more would join in.”

Each business featured on the map has copies on hand, and most businesses are giving them away. This map is also available at The Reporter & The Democrat office. Supplies are limited.

“This is something that wouldn’t have been practical to do without our talented local artist. You can look at this picture of Emmetsburg for a long time to take in all the unique things on it,” said McCain. “No doubt, this map will be framed and hanging on the wall for years.”
