“You Gotta See It-Taste It-Feel It- Enjoy It; In Order to Believe It!” This year’s theme to the 20th annual Bully Bullhead Weekend Celebration in Ruthven, Iowa and on Lost Island Lake July 6, 7 and 8.
The event kicks off over 50 events on Friday morning with the BBW Tractor Ride with registration beginning at 7 a.m. The ride will take off towards Graettinger, Ingham Lake, and Lost Island Lake at 8 a.m. Other Friday events includes a new event, the Craft/Vendor Show set up in the green space of Wild Wood Flower Gift Shop beginning at 3 p.m. Across the street beginning at 4 p.m will be the free community hot dog feed sponsored by the Iowa State Bank. This is also the location for Bob and Ellie Finnegan to be honored as Citizens of the Year at 5:40 p.m.
Other Friday events include the 4th through 8th grade 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Centennial Park & Pool and the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull at 6 p.m. near the Catholic Church. The Ruthven pool will also be hosting a “Tween Swim” at 6 p.m. and a “Teen Swim” at 8 p.m. The night is capped off with a spectacular large fireworks show on the northeasterly shores of Lost Island Lake as the fireworks are shot off from the Lost Island Beach in Huston Park at 10 p.m.
Set the alarm clock early on Saturday as things get going early with the BBW Fishing Contest at 7 a.m. Other events include the garage sales both in Ruthven and at Lost Island Lake, a bake sale at the Methodist church, antique tractor and machinery show, mini doughnuts, history slide show and so much more! The 5K, 10K and Fun Run event will be held at Huston Park on Lost Island Lake at 8 a.m. and the slow pitch softball tournament will get underway at the Ruthven ball fields also at 8 a.m. The BBW bike ride will kick off downtown at 9 a.m. with all proceeds going towards the Lost Island trails project.
Other Saturday morning events include free inflatables and games at the Iowa State Bank sponsored by the Ruthven Community Care Center at 9 a.m., library book sale beginning at 9 a.m., and the Mason’s Turkey Fillet & Brat feed located on the green space of the Wild Wood Flower Gift Shop starting at 11 a.m. The Ruthven-Lost Island Railroad Express will also be giving free train rides for the kids!
At noon, the BBW Car Show kicks off at Cricket Park on Gowrie by the railroad tracks. Of course, one event everyone loves is the large parade! The BBW parade will start at 1:30 p.m. leaving from the south end of the football field and traveling the same parade route as years past. After the parade, the Lost Island Nature Center will be hosting a family fun event that will be entertaining for everyone and the Pony Express will be giving pony rides near the American Legion at 3:30 p.m.. Also at 3:30 p.m. you can cool off, or heat up at the Ruthven Swimming Pool! Admission to the pool all weekend is just $1 for everyone. Also at 3 p.m. at the pool will be a special fun fund-raising event: The Hot Wing Cook-Off! Come join the fun and taste the many good recipes of area entries!
The evening will conclude with a very special dance sponsored by the Ruthven Fire Department. The Judd Hoos Band from Minneapolis, Minnesota will be performing at this year’s street dance on Gowrie in front of Bullys Bar & Grill.
Sunday morning kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with the American Legion presenting their pancake, egg and sausage breakfast along with the Legion Auxiliary’s Bake Sale and White Elephant Sale! The remainder of the morning is somewhat reserved so families may attend the church of their choice in Ruthven. At 10 a.m., the BBW Fun Day Horse Show begins at rodeo grounds at the corner of U.S. highway 18 and N-18. The pool will open at 11 a.m. for a senior swim with coffee and bars, and then progress to Pool Fun Day Games for the kids at 1 p.m. The Co-Ed volleyball tournament kicks off at noon also at the softball fields. At 1 p.m., the Progressive Organ Recital begins at Zion Lutheran Church, proceeding to each church in the community and finishing at the Lost Island Lutheran Church where there will be an ice cream social and maidrite supper at 4 until 7 p.m.
Never a dull moment in Ruthven during Bully Bullhead Weekend and this year’s event promises to be just as big and fun as last year’s event!
