Celebrate on the Fourth of July

Celebrate the Fourth of July Wednesday in the park. Emmetsburg has a full day of fun for the family. Events are hosted by members of FUEL (Fellowship Uniting Emerging Leaders), a division of Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce.

Soper Park, on the south shore of Five Island Lake, will be the hub of activities.

Children’s games will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., sponsored by members of VFW Post #2295. Get ready to get wet and run fast. Water balloon toss and foot races are always part of the morning, along with big wheel and tricycle races, Children and adults will take part. The VFW will provide cans of pop and Emmetsburg Care Center will have surprises for the kids.

Sand Volleyball Tournament also begins at 9 a.m. There is room for eight teams and some registrations have already been received. So, get a team together and register in advance at the Chamber Office. Fee is $30 per team, with 100-percent payback in prizes. For information, contact Brady Bird at 515-423-4525.

New this year is a Bean Bag Tournament. Registration of teams of two will begin at 11 a.m. in Soper Park. Cost is $5 per team. 100-percent payback to the winners. Tournament play begins at 11:30 a.m.

Emmetsburg Municipal Band will play their final summer concert of the season at 1 p.m. in Soper Park. Members of VFW Post #2295 will present the colors and offer a salute. Emmetsburg Mayor Myrna Heddinger will give her Fourth of July address.

Food vendors will be in Soper Park throughout the afternoon and evening.

Evening entertainment will be provided by Great Lakes Hybrids, a band based out of Pocahontas. They will play at the beach house in Soper Park from 7 p.m. until the fireworks.

Fireworks will be shot off over Five Island Lake at dusk. Donations are still being accepted for the fireworks fund. Make donations at Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce and at Emmetsburg City Hall.

Cylinder Celebration

Cylinder will also host its 4th of July Celebration on Wednesday. Families are invited to enjoy a day of food, fun and friendship with small town hospitality.

Sign up for the Horseshoe Tournament at the Rack Shack. Register by 2:30 p.m., with play starting at 3 p.m. Draw partner; 1000-percent payback.

Bring your pet to the Pet Parade at 4 p.m. Games for all ages follow the pet spectacular in the City Park.

Palo Alto County Cattlemen will be cooking burgers and steak sandwiches from 5 to 8 p.m. A free will donation will be accepted. All proceeds to go sponsor the celebration.

Steve Lang will perform at the Cylinder City Park from 7 to 10 p.m.

The day will conclude with Cylinder’s famous fireworks display at dusk.
