Grotto Celebrates 100 Years

The Grotto of the Redemption is observing 100 years with a three-day celebration this weekend. Highlights of the weekend include a walking pilgrimage through the Grotto; geological presentations; and Sunday morning Mass celebrated by Bishop R. Walker Nickless, Diocese of Sioux City.

Events begin Friday, June 22, with a Retreat with Father Kollasch at 3 p.m. Gather at the Museum for the Retreat.

The Silent Auctin begins at 4 p.m. at the Grotto Gift Shop. Bids will be accepted from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

A kids’ movie will be shown outdoors at 6:30 p.m. Popcorn will be served by members of the Lions Club.

Events on Saturday, June 23, begin bright and early with a Walking Pilgrimage through the Grotto at 7:30 a.m. The Art Show and the Quilt Show are open to the public at 9 a.m. Quilts will be on display at Sts. Peter & Paul Church.

Join the Parade around the Grotto grounds at 10 a.m. A Clown Show is at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wine tasting is from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

The first of five Geological Presentations is at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Rock Display area near the museum. Presentations are also at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. A special presentation is a Geode breaking at 4 p.m. with a geologist.

Children’s games and art contest are from 1 to 4 p.m. Children can purchase a wristband to participate in games all afternoon.

The Grotto Tour Guide reunion is at 2 p.m. at the museum. Sean Dalton, youth speaker, will be on stage at 6 p.m.

The day concludes with a 7 p.m. concert by the Christian rock band, Remedy Drive. Tickets are available.

Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless, Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City, is scheduled to celebrate Mass at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in West Bend as part of the Grotto of the Redemption’s 100th Anniversary Celebration Weekend. Mass will begin at 10 a.m. and is open to the public.

“The Grotto of the Redemption is a noteworthy site for all Christian believers and we are blessed to have such a major landmark within our Diocese,” said Bishop Nickless. “Father Dobberstien created this work of art as a true testament to his faith and his dedication to the Blessed Mother. Anyone who visits the Grotto comes away with a sincere appreciation of his hard work.”

Concelebrating the Mass with Bishop Nickless will be Father Thomas Hart, pastor of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, as well as many other priests and deacons from throughout the diocese.

Follow Mass, parishioners and visitors are invited to a lunch served by the West Bend Knights of Columbus. Serving is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Children’s Art will be judged at 11 a.m. with contest winners announced at 1 p.m.

The 100th Anniversary Celebration will conclude with the Grotto Songfest. Featured groups are Heart Song and Higher Power.
