Sherman Hilfiker A Candidate For District #5 Supervisor
Sherman E. Hilfiker has announced his Democratic candidacy for the Palo Alto County 5th District Supervisor position. The newly formed District 5 is a result of the State’s redistricting plan for Palo Alto County.
“I am asking the residents of District 5 to allow me the opportunity to be ‘A New Voice for Our New District’,” said Hilfiker.
The upcoming 2012 Primary Election will be held Tuesday, June 5.
Sherman was born and raised on a farm in Nebraska. He graduated from Mount Marty College Yankton, SD with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Minors in Chemistry and Math. While attending Mount Marty College he met, and later married, the former Mary Kunz of Emmetsburg.
After graduation he entered the U.S. Navy. He and his family moved to Emmetsburg in 1995 after retiring from the Navy.
Sherman taught several different computer courses at Iowa Lakes Community College, Spencer. He managed the Emmetsburg Community School’s network including servers and personal computers in the district.He is currently a Computer Technician at a local Computer Store. He is also Lifetime Member of the Emmetsburg VFW.
During his18 years of military service, Sherman was the Administrative Officer for a Naval Command, providing administrative support to the Command Officer, Executive Officer, and other department heads. He was in charge of a computer system that maintained the medical data for all U.S. Navy facilities world wide. He supervised a department with four divisions and over 30 employees in a 500 bed medical teaching hospital. That department’s budget was $3 million annually. He reorganized a department and staff’s working hours saving $11,700 annually. This was accomplished by eliminating the paying of shift differentials and staff members were shifted into positions that better supported the command’s needs.
While interfacing with Pentagon officials he did budgetary reviews and computer systems analysis. As a part of the Naval Inspector General’s staff he was involved with the inspections of commands to determine compliance with naval regulations.
At his last tour of duty, he was Acting Director for Administration for a 200-bed teaching hospital. Sherman received the Navy Commendation Medal based on his ability to interface with personnel at all levels in several major commands within the US Navy.
“As Supervisor for District 5, I would evaluate each line item of the county’s budget during the annual budgeting process,” he said. “I feel it is crucial to scrutinize the expenditures for proper execution of the budget throughout the fiscal year. I would spend time in each of the county’s departments to see how they function and interface with each other.”
Hilfiker added, “My promise to the residents of District 5 is to do my research on issues before making a decision. This means I would be asking for your input on issues that affect the county.
“I am asking for your support and your vote in this important Primary election on June 5, 2012.”
