Pure Energy On Stage This Saturday
Emmetsburg High School will be filled with song, dance, color and showmanship this Saturday as the Emmetsburg High School Vocal Music Department will host the 19th Annual Emmetsburg “Extravaganza” Invitational Show Choir Contest. A total of 35 show choirs from Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska will compete in various divisional classes throughout the day on Saturday, March 3.
Performances will begin in both the high school auditorium and high school gym at 8 a.m. and will wrap up with the preliminary awards, which are scheduled for 5:45 p.m. All show choir performances for Class 3A, 4A and Prep groups will take place in the high school gym, while class 1A, 2A, Middle School and Vocal Jazz groups will compete in the auditorium during the day.
With 35 groups participating, the 2011 Extravaganza will be the largest in the 19-year history of the event, and the largest in the state of Iowa during the year. As each group competes, they are judged by a panel of judges and scored. The six show choirs that received the top scores during the day in the gymnasium along with the highest scoring 1A-2A show choir from the auditorium will compete for the overall championship in the evening concert. This Finals Concert features the best of the best and will be a very high energy and entertaining show. The finals will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the high school gym and will conclude at 9:55 p.m. with a performance by Emmetsburg’s High Voltage varsity show choir. Following the final performance, the overall awards and trophies will be presented.
All told, over 1,500 performers will take part in the day’s events. Members of the Emmetsburg varsity and junior varsity show choirs will meet and host the visiting groups in assigned homerooms through the day. Along with their hosting duties, vocal students will also handle numerous other duties during the day, such as serving as hosts for judges, ballot and tabulation assistants and technical and stage crews. Some 120 Emmetsburg vocal students will chip in to do their share during the day.
At the same time, the Emmetsburg Vocal Music Booster group will provide food services for the visiting performers and spectators. Booster club members will also supervise hallways and warm-up rooms along with all food and concession services. The Invitational is the vocal music department’smajor fund-raising endeavor each year.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend the Emmetsburg Show Choir Extravaganza Invitational for all or part of the day on Saturday, March 3. A one-time admission charge allows access to the performances at any time during the day and the evening finals. Food will be provided throughout the entire day in the student center, with a pasta dinner beginning at 4:00p.m. The Show Choir Extravaganza provides an great opportunity for the public to experience the excitement and musical energy of some of the finest show choirs in the four-state region and support the EHS vocal program all at the same time this Saturday, March 3.
