Community Welcomes UDMO?Director
Upper Des Moines Opportunity welcomed its new director the end of January. Since then, he has been making the rounds of “Welcome” receptions at offices in the 12-county service area.
“It’s been a whirlwind the last couple of weeks,”?said Jamey Whitney, new Executive Director at Upper Des Moines Opportunity. “This is new territory, but nothing is foreign to me,”
Whitney has an MSW degree and had served as adjunct professor of Social Policy Analysis at Pittsburg State University in Kansas. He was also the assistant director of development at Neosho County Community College.
With 20 years of key management experience, Whitney has experience in planning and anti-poverty programs, as well as community development work at community action agencies in Iowa and Kansas.
“We are here to help our customers,” said Whitney. “That’s what our mission is all about.”
He cited goals of securing funding for programs offered through Upper Des Moines and marketing those programs to the public. He also stressed reinforcing the teamwork of staff and community partners.
Whitney is a certified national trainer for the community action network’s Results Outcome Management Accountability system. In addition to having been an assistant Head Start program director and director of an Early Head Start program, Whitney served nine years as a national consultant to federal agencies to review and assess local Head Start programs. Upper Des Moines Opportunity operates Head Start in eight of the agency’s service area counties.
