By Staff | Dec 22, 2011

Todd Suhr is running for the Office of Sheriff in Palo Alto County, bringing with him 28 years of experience. He is seeking the Democratic nomination for Sheriff in the June primary.

Deputy Suhr has been promoted within the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office to Sargeant in 2000, Lieutenant in 2005 and currently Chief Deputy since 2007.

Suhr had nine years of experience prior to joining the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office in 1992. Five of those nine years he served as Chief of Police in Marcus. Suhr has accumulated 15 years of administrative, supervisory and budget experience in law enforcement.

An original member of the Multi Agency Response Team M.A.R.T, Suhr has been a co-team leader since inception in 2000. He has also accumulated over 2200 hours of law enforcement training and has had his work upheld in cases in the Iowa Court of Appeals, Iowa Supreme Court and the 8th Circuit Federal Court.

Since Sheriff Denny Goeders took office in 2005, Suhr has worked together with Sheriff Goeders on administration of the Sheriff’s Office. Suhr authored the Sheriff’s Office Mission statement as follows: The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office with strive to enhance the quality of life for the Citizens of Palo Alto County by providing professional, cost effective law enforcement services delivered with common sense, respect and compassion for all.

Suhr researched and implemented the formal Probation to Sheriff Program that established formal guidelines for probationers to follow. The probation program has aided in making new cases against people and holding them accountable, in addition to bringing in revenue that the Sheriff’s Office has used to offset taxpayer costs.

The Team concept at the Sheriff’s Office was initiated by Deputy Suhr. He works with communications, jail and deputies through team meetings. They also worked on employee appraisal policy and performance guidelines and supervisors implementation of policy.

Suhr has written grants for several projects, including laptop computers in the patrol cars; a joint project with Emmetsburg Police Department to share mobile vision equipment; and front office security and jail plumbing. Sheriff Goeders and Suhr worked together to maintain and upgrade the jail with security updates, equipment and facility upgrades. Working with the 911, grant funding was obtained for the 911 Communications Center upgrade. The Emmetsburg Police Department and the Palo Alto County Attorney’s Office is now sharing computer network data.

“I would like to carry on the good work we have done over the years”. “I look forward to the opportunity to serve as your Sheriff for Palo Alto County” Todd Suhr.

Todd and his family moved to the West Bend area when he began working in Palo Alto County. Todd and his wife Kay and their children Travis and Nicole built a home near Lost Island Lake in 1993 and have lived there since that time.
