Celebrate the 25 Days of Christmas with Emmetsburg Retail Association.

Kick off the holidays when Emmetsburg Retail Association begins Holiday Open House events today, Dec. 1, at participating businesses. This is just the beginning of December’s shopping and special events.

The first Open House is tonight, Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce office, 1121 Broadway. Hosts are volunteers from the Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center and employees at POET.

Visitors are invited to stop between 4 and 7 p.m. Guests will be greeted by Santa and Mrs. Claus and a special gift will be given to children. Musical entertainment will be provided by the group Biblical Brass & Beyond. This contemporary group of musicians is making its third appearance at Emmetsburg’s Christmas event. Under the direction of Terry Sorensen, Biblical Brass will perform a variety of Christmas songs.

Bring your own camera to take photos with Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Enjoy treats and beverages.

Horse-drawn wagon rides will be provided by members of Pony Express. Weather permitting, guests will be taken on a brief tour of downtown. There will be new decorations on Courthouse Square to brighten the town and guests can get a good look at the decorations as they ride in the wagon.

At each Open House there will be a pile of gifts, one from each participating Emmetsburg Retail Association (ERA) business. The gifts are each valued at $25 or more. Guests will register during every Open House for the numbered packages. They will be asked to list name, address and telephone number, along with the number from the gift they hope to win. Drawings will be held at the close of each business open house and winners will be notified by phone.

The pile of gifts will roam from business to business as the month progresses.

Friday, Dec. 2, Laurens State Bank at 2407 Main Street will host the ERA Open House. Their event will be held in conjunction with the Friday Chamber Coffee.

Saturday, Dec. 3, the ERA Open House will be at ETC, 906 Broadway. In-house specials and refreshments will be provided to shoppers between 1 and 4 p.m.

Charity Tree Auction

The second annual Emmetsburg Retail Association Charity Tree Auction is Sunday, Dec. 4, at the VFW Hall on Highway 4/18 West. Over 20 trees have been decorated by ERA member businesses.

The trees will be on display Friday, Dec. 2, through Sunday, Dec. 4, before the 2:15 p.m. auction. Dana Burdorf will give a repeat performance as guest auctioneer. Bidding numbers (on paper trees) will be provided.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Glenn Henriksen at the keyboard, beginning at 2 p.m. Henriksen is an accomplished, versatile pianist and organist.

The public is invited to enjoy the music and participate in the auction. Proceeds from the auction will be donated for heating assistance through Upper Des Moines Opportunity.

In conjunction with the tree auction, guests and auction bidders are encouraged to make donations of new socks. They will be placed on a “tree of socks” and given to children at Emmetsburg schools.
