Emmetsburg Takes Part In The “Healthiest State” Initiative
Iowa currently ranks as the 19th healthiest state in the nation, according to the 2010 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. But, we can do better.
The “Healthiest State” Initiative is a privately led, public initiative. Individuals, families, businesses, all types of organizations and the public sector are joining together to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation over the next five years.
Iowans will kick off the Healthiest State Initiative with a “Start Somewhere Walk” on Friday, Oct. 7. Locally, Lloyd Satterwhite is the Emmetsburg Ambassador.
At noon that day, all Iowans are being asked to walk for one kilometer. How far is a kilometer? About six-tenths of a mile. It is 7.5 blocks. About a 12-minute stroll for the average person walking at a normal speed.
Satterwhite has organized a walk for the general public. At 12 noon Friday, Oct. 7, meet in the parking lot near Fareway. The group will walk to Soper Park and back, one kilometer.
Other walks have also been organized throughout the community.
Iowa Lakes Community College and the Smith Wellness Center’s area residents will hold a Start Somewhere Walk at 12 noon Friday, Oct. 7. Meet at the Wellness Center for a one kilometer walk.
Emmetsburg Community School students will be walking around the high school track, beginning at 11:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7.
Emmetsburg Catholic School students will be walking on Friday, Oct. 7, also.
Employees at Palo Alto County Health System will be walking on Friday, Oct. 7, on the hospital grounds.
