ECS Irish Honors

Bernie Joyce is being honored as the 2011 Honorary Alumna of Emmetsburg Catholic High School. A recognition dinner has been scheduled in conjunction with a reunion of Emmetsburg High School graduates from 1965, 1966 and 1967 next Saturday, Sept. 17.

Bernadette (Kliegl)?Joyce graduated from Emmetsburg Catholic High School in 1967. She continues her involvement with Emmetsburg Catholic School as a parent and grandparent. She also served as director of the school’s hot lunch program from 1997 to 2005.

Bernie is the only daughter among six brothers to Warren and Bernadette Kliegl. Her mother graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1936 and Bernie and her brothers are all Emmetsburg Catholic alumni.

Bernie and Larry Joyce were married Sept. 11, 1970, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Their four children (Pat, Andy, Teresa and Kari) are also proud Emmetsburg Catholic School Alumni. The Joyce legacy continues as seven of Bernie’s and Larry’s grandchildren are currently enrolled at Emmetsburg Catholic School: Pat and Tina Joyce’s children, Kayla, John, Molly and Michael; and, Andy and Kim Joyce’s children, Connor, Keegan and Calista. Kari and Matt Mueller live in Emmetsburg. Teresa and Cody Alesch and their children, Sacha and Teague, live in Graettinger.

Emmetsburg Catholic School Booster Club and the Emmetsburg Catholic High School classes of 1965, 1966 and 1967 invite all to join them in awarding Bernie Joyce with this honor. The recognition will take place at a dinner Saturday, Sept. 14, at Holy Family Parish Center, following the 4 p.m. Mass.

Emmetsburg Catholic School opened as St. Mary’s Academy in 1889. In 1968, St. Mary’s and St. Ellen’s grade schools merged as Emmetsburg Catholic School.

Today, Emmetsburg Catholic School has classes for students in Pre-K and Kindergarten through eighth grade. Emmetsburg Catholic School provides many opportunities to make a Catholic education affordable. There are innovative packages for new students and families, plus options for students and families of all faiths.

The mission of Emmetsburg Catholic School, in partnership with parents, is to prepare its students morally, intellectually and globally to be responsible Christians through integration of religious truth and values with all learning and living.
