Demolition To Begin Next Week
FLOOR JOISTS from the upper level rest atop a door inside the downtown building at 917 Broadway. The building is scheduled for demolition, beginning next week.
“This will be a benefit to the community to have this hazard removed,” said Emmetsburg Chamber President Dan McCain. “A contractor has been on site, developing the plan for removal.”
The tear-down process is expected to begin next Monday, and will move quite quickly. All building materials will be treated as contaminated, due to age of the building and materials used. As the building comes down, the waste will be wet down, then transported to a specific area in the landfill. The DNR will monitor disposal.
Adjoining business and property owners have been advised of when the work will be done and disruption will be kept to a minimum. When demolition is complete, the lot will be level grade. Emmetsburg Retail Association members will reassess to repurpose the lot.
Before the building is razed, members of the Emmetsburg Retail Association went inside the building (photos above and on page 5 of The Democrat).
Emmetsburg Retail Association and Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce are spearheading the demolition project with participation and funding from a Brownfield Grant (Iowa DNR), grant funds from Palo Alto County Gaming Development Corporation, the Storm Committee, and City of Emmetsburg. Contractor for removal is Midwest Construction, Fort Dodge. –Jane Whitmore
