Emmetsburg Police Department and Emmetsburg Retail Association have joined forces to make downtown Emmetsburg pedestrian friendly.
Emmetsburg Police conducted Pedestrian Safety Crosswalk Checks at three downtown locations July 27, July 28 and July 29. Officers monitored the crosswalks as Jane Soenen crossed at the intersections.
Emmetsburg Police Chief Eric Hanson gave statistics on the crosswalk checks:
At the intersection of 11th and Broadway, July 27, all drivers were in 100% compliance, stopping for Jane as she crossed the highway.
At the intersection of 10th and Broadway, July 28, officers were in contact with three drivers who failed to stop for pedestrian Jane as she attempted to cross the highway.
At the intersection of Main and Union, (pictured above) July 29, officers were in contact with 11 drivers who failed to stop as Jane attempted to cross the street.
Emmetsburg Police Department will continue to conduct pedestrian crosswalk checks during the remainder of the summer and into the fall. The checks will be conducted periodically and will not be announced in advance. --Jane Whitmore photo
