Back-To-School Time!

It’s the first week of August and time to begin thinking about heading back to school. Schools throughout Palo Alto County will be registering students for the 2011-2012 school year next week. While in-person registration is the norm for all of the area schools, mail-in registration has become popular. And this year, one school is beginning to offer registrations online.

The Emmetsburg Community School District will be holding in-person registration for all grades in the middle/high school library from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, and from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11.

The principals’ offices will be closed on Friday, Aug. 12, to process all registrations. If parents cannot make it to registration, they may stop by the school building that the student attends the following week.

In addition, the Emmetsburg school district will begin offering online registration this year at www.emmetsburg.k12.ia.us Directions are listed on the home page of the Web site. Payment to the district may be made via PayPal. Online registration is available in English and Spanish.

The online registration option is only available to those students and parents who have an existing account on the school’s Web site. However, students new to the district will need to register in person.

The first day of school for Emmetsburg public schools is Wednesday, Aug. 24 for grades 1-12, and Friday, Aug. 26, for Kindergarten, Readiness, and Early Childhood Special Education students. Four-year old preschool youngsters will begin school on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

At Emmetsburg Catholic School, registration for classes will be held Monday, Aug. 8, and Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the school. If parents are unable to attend these registration hours, other arrangements may be made by calling 852-3464.

The first day of school for Emmetsburg Catholic School students is Tuesday, Aug. 23. Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Buses will not be operating on the first day of school; parents will be responsible for transporting their students to school on this day.

Graettinger/Terril Community School District will offer in-person registration on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Graettinger school building between 9 a.m. and noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Registration at the Terril school building will be held on Thursday, Aug. 11, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mail-in registrations have been utilized by the district for several years now. Registration packets are mailed to parents of G/T students, who may fill out the information and return the packets by mail.

The first day of school at Graettinger-Terril is Thursday, Sept. 1.

At Ruthven-Ayrshire Community School, parents may register their students in-person or via mail. In-person registration will be Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the school. Registration packets are also mailed to parents, which they may fill out and return in the mail.

K-12 students at Ruthven-Ayrshire head back to school on Tuesday, Aug. 23. There will be a 2:30 p.m. early dismissal. Preschool students will return to school on Monday, Aug. 29.

West Bend-Mallard Community School District will hold registration on Monday, Aug. 8, at the West Bend school building, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registration will be held at the Mallard school building on Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Registration forms can be found online at www.west-bend.k12.ia.us, printed at home, filled out, and brought to registration to speed up the process.

The school is sponsoring an Open House on Wednesday, Aug. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at both the Mallard and West Bend school buildings. Sixth grade orientation will be held from 5 to 5:45 p.m. and freshmen orientation is from 6 to 6:45 p.m.

The first day of school at West Bend-Mallard is Thursday, Aug. 18. Classes will dismiss at 1:30 p.m. on that day.
