School Board Filing Period Is Underway
Monday, July 11, was the first day for filing of nomination papers for upcoming School Board elections in the state of Iowa. Palo Alto County’s four school districts will all have contests on their respective ballots for the Sept. 13 School Board elections.
In Emmetsburg, four seats on the Emmetsburg Community School District’s Board of Directors will be on the ballot, as the seats of Don Hagen, Linda Tienter, Steve Pelzer and Laure Egland are up for election.
The Ruthven-Ayrshire district has four spots up for election. Seats up for grabs include those occupied by Board President Lisa Berkland, Ray Grandstaff, Dave Forey and Matthew Graves.
The Graettinger-Terril School Board will be going from seven to five seats this year. This will leave four open terms on the ballot which are currently filled by Duane Hoffman, Roger Schmidt, Larry Flaharty, and Jim Eldridge.
For the West Bend-Mallard Community School District, the seats of Lannie Miller, Dawn Schmidt, Jessica Wickman and Dr. Jillian Hansen are all up for election this year.
Additionally, some residents of the county will have a ballot to vote for the Iowa Lakes Community College Director District one, as the term of board member Jim Miller of Ringsted expires this year.
Persons interested in running for a school board seat must obtain nomination papers, which are available from your local school district board secretary. Potential candidates must obtain the signatures of at least one percent of the qualified electors in a district, or 50 signatures, whichever is less, but at least 10 signatures on their nomination petitions.
The last day to file nomination papers is Thursday, Aug. 4, at 5 p.m. Nomination papers must be delivered to the Palo Alto County Auditor’s office by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5.
School Board elections will be held across Iowa on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
