Celebrate Independence Day

Fourth of July celebrations have been planned in Palo Alto County communities this holiday weekend. Fireworks will be bursting in Emmetsburg, Cylinder, Ruthven and West Bend.

WEST BEND begins its celebration on Friday, July 1, with a tractor ride at 8 a.m. Spectators will gather at the ball field at 5 p.m. for Pony League, Little League and T-Ball games. The KC Barbecue begins at 5:30 p.m. on the school grounds. The Pedal Tractor Pull begins at 6 p.m. on the school grounds. A Street Dance on Main Street, featuring the “Rude Band,” is from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The annual Fourth of July Parade is Saturday, July 2. Parade line-up begins at 9:30 a.m., with parade judging at 10:30 a.m. The Parade begins at 11 a.m.

The food stands open at 12 noon. Four-wheeler pull registration also begins at 12 noon.

Carnival games are open from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Bingo will be played from 12:30 to 6 p.m. Inflatables will be up and bouncing from 12:30 to 6 p.m.

At 1 p.m. the Four-Wheeler Pull starts near the baseball field. There is free swimming in the West Bend pool from 1 to 5 p.m. Liberty Games will begin at 1:30 p.m. on the school grounds.

Performances in the showmobile begin at 2 p.m. The Redemption Singers take the stage at 2 p.m. A Community Hymn Sing begins at 3 p.m. Marcoux Corner is at 4 p.m. and a Taekwondo Demonstration is at 5 p.m. Mindy’s Miles Bike giveaway is at 6 p.m. The Auction begins at 6:15 p.m. and so does Cow Pie Bingo.

Marcoux Corner, a four-piece a’cappela performance group, will give an evening performance on the showmobile. Their concert is from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Fireworks will be shot off at dusk.

The weekend of activities will conclude Sunday, July 3, with breakfast, featuring Chris’ Cakes, served from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center.

EMMETSBURG’s Independence Day Celebration is Sunday, July 3, with activities in Soper Park. Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce is hosting the event.

Children’s games, sponsored by VFW Post #2295, will begin at 11:30 a.m. in Soper Park. Get ready to get wet and run fast. Foot races and water balloon toss are sure to be part of the day.

Sand Volleyball Tournament begins at 12 noon. Co-ed city volleyball rules apply. Team rosters must be presented before each match and include an even number of males and females. There is room for eight teams in the tournament. Entry fees must be paid in advance, payable at Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce.

The Veterans Salute and Mayoral Address are at 1 p.m., followed by the municipal band concert. This is the last municipal band concert of the season.

Throughout the afternoon, vendors will be in Soper Park. Community groups interested in setting up a vending area should contact Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce.

Fireworks will be shot off from First Island over the south bay of Five Island Lake at dusk, approximately 10 p.m. Donations are still being accepted for the fireworks fund and can be left at the Emmetsburg Chamber office.

CYLINDER will see the return of fireworks this year.

Festivities begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 3, with games for kids of all ages in Cylinder Park. Palo Alto County Cattlemen will be grilling burgers in the park, starting at 5 p.m. A free will donation will be accepted for the meal.

Enjoy a Stage Hypnosis Show at 7 p.m. with Kathy Heng. A free will donation will be accepted.

Prairie Land Band will take the stage at 8 p.m. This is one of the bands that played for Cylinder’s Quasquicentennial Celebration last year. Fireworks will be shot off at dusk.

Immediately following the fireworks, drawings will be held for some great prizes: a family membership at the Smith Wellness Center; two-hour computer service from Slash Point; one month trial and no sign-up fee at Curves; four passes to King’s Pointe in Storm Lake; two drawings for an oil change at ASI; a portable grill, donated by Wentzel’s True Value; and an LED wind chime, donated by Hardware Hank. Tickets for the drawing are available at State Line Co-op in Cylinder, Iowa Trust & Savings Bank in Cylinder, the Rack Shack, or from Deb Weisbrod or Kathy Heng.

The Cylinder All-School Class Reunion is Saturday, July 2, at the VFW in Emmetsburg.

RUTHVEN will kick off Bully Bullhead Weekend with activities this weekend. Fireworks will be shot off from Huston Beach at 10 p.m. Sunday, July 3. A Boat Parade on Lost Island Lake is scheduled for Monday, July 4, at 2 p.m. Bully Bullhead Weekend is July 8-10.
