A near-stationary thunderstorm drenched Emmetsburg for several hours on Saturday, causing some flooding of intersections in the community, including Main and Lawler Streets. The rain event began around 9 a.m. and lasted through mid-afternoon and would ultimately lead to the cancellation of the Palo Alto County Relay For Life after it had been delayed for three hours.

Rain caused a delay in the annual Relay For Life event scheduled for Saturday, June 18. It started raining in the morning and the noon opening ceremonies were delayed until 3 p.m. It continued to rain most of the afternoon, causing event coordinators to cancel the event for the day.

Relay For Life Chairman Deb Harris said Monday that the committee will meet to reschedule a “Mini”?Relay for sometime in July.

“Right now we’re looking at an evening event so we can light the luminaries,” said Harris. “There are so many luminaries that people have purchased. We’ll possibly have some entertainment and some games, too. The committee will be making those decisions.”

Raffle winners were selected and some teams served food. The dunk tank had a couple of people on the wet seat. Look for more photos on page 5.
