By Jane Whitmore
Teams of walkers will take to the track this Saturday for the annual Relay For Life fundraiser. The day honors those in their fight against cancer and remembers those who lost their fight against the disease.
Relay For Life will be held on the Palo Alto County Courthouse Square in Emmetsburg this Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m, Opening ceremonies are at 12 noon with the National Anthem, followed by the Survivors Lap.
Throughout the day, teams will walk relay-style around the track. They will also have fun off the track, taking part in a variety of activities. There will also be games for the kids to play where they can win prizes and they can jump in the inflatable’s.
A variety of food stands will be set up near the track. Cool off with root beer floats, ice cream sundaes and drinks, and keep up your energy for the walk with hot dogs, popcorn, pulled pork sandwiches, burgers, and walking tacos.
Relay For Life is a family-oriented event for teams of walkers and community members. Area residents who are not part of a team are invited to bring lawn chairs to enjoy the day. There will be plenty of entertainment.
An annual highlight is the Dunk Tank. Community personalities will take a turn on the wet seat during the afternoon and evening. Get your chance to give these people a bath. Tickets are available during the event.
The Relay Committee is offering raffles for several items, including a new bicycle, a quilt, a one-year membership to the Smith Wellness Center, a 50-inch flat screen television and even a laptop computer. Tickets are available from committee members and at Relay For Life this Saturday.
The Luminaria Ceremony begins at sundown. This touching ceremony honors the community’s cancer survivors and remembers those lost to the disease. Teams will circle the track, which will be rimmed with glowing luminarias. The names of survivors and those lost to the disease will be read aloud.
Luminarias can be obtained for a donation by calling Sheri Freeman at 712-480-3825. Luminarias can also be purchased Saturday at Courthouse Square.
Money raised by Relay For Life directly benefits people in our community. Through the Relay for Life event, the American Cancer Society distributes funds to support cutting-edge cancer research and helps cancer patients with questions. They publish lifesaving literature on cancer prevention, detection and tobacco issues, and the American Cancer Society has worked to develop a new generation of weapons to fight cancer.
