Celebrate National Nursing Home Week

National Nursing Home Week is May 8-13, and area nursing home residents and staff are ready to celebrate. The American Health Care Association established the weeklong celebration in 1967. This year’s theme is “Fulfilling the Promise.”

Emmetsburg Mayor John Schad recently signed a proclamation declaring the week as a time to visit our town’s nursing home residents, who are themselves living history, and to recognize the high quality of care that our long-term care facilities provide.

Many special activities are planned at nursing home facilities throughout Palo Alto County.

Emmetsburg Care Center will kick-off the week on Monday, May 9, with Reach For The Stars at 9:30 a.m. and Minute To Win It at 2 p.m. Residents and staff will enjoy a Red, White & Blue Dress Contest.

A country breakfast will begin the day on Tuesday, May 10. The celebration continues with a Farmer’s Dress-Up Contest at 2 p.m.

Wednesday, May 11, will be filled with water-inspired activities. At 9:30 a.m., there’s Pass The Beach Ball and at 1:30 p.m., it’s time for Water Games, including Dunk Tank, Water Balloons, and Water Guns.

Fashion will be the word of the day on Thursday, May 12. Residents will enjoy Spring a New Fashion at 9:30 a.m. and a Fashion Show at 2 p.m. Mr. B. will stop by at 6:30 p.m.

The week of special activities wraps up on Friday, May 13, with a 10 a.m. Mass and Ice Cream in a Bag at 1:30 p.m.

Lakeside Lutheran Home will begin their celebration by wearing Hawaiian attire on “Hawaiian Day,” Monday, May 9.

On Tuesday, May 10, staff will enjoy a special lunch with pizza and goodies from the bakery.

“Giddy-Up Go Picnic Day” is Wednesday, May 11. Residents and staff are encouraged to dress in Western attire.

Thursday, May 12, is “Hat Day.” Everyone should wear their most unique hat to win a prize. Golf cart rides will be given at 2 p.m.

“Game Day” is on Friday, May 13. Everyone is invited to come and play Minute To Win It at 2 p.m.

PARC Hall will open the week of activities on Sunday, May 8, with a Mother’s Day Tea in the afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m.

On Monday, May 9, PARC Hall is having a “goodie” day. Everyone is welcome!

“Staff Day” is Tuesday, May 10. All staff will be honored.

Thursday, May 12, is “Resident Day.” In the morning, residents will enjoy one of their favorite activities, a Brown Sack Auction. There will also be musical entertainment in the afternoon and a special supper in the evening.

West Bend Care Center begins their celebration of National Nursing Home Week on Monday, May 9, with a helium balloon lift-off. On Wednesday, May 11, an omelet breakfast will be served to the community. A special coffee for the nursing staff will be held on Thursday, May 12. Friday, May 13, wraps up the week of events at West Bend Care Center with a resident reunion.
