A Reason To Go Outside

By Staff | Feb 8, 2011

The outdoors may have held little appeal for the majority of us on Monday with temperatures barely making it above zero, but there was one fascinating reason to venture out on Monday morning—the sun dogs! Low on the eastern sky, the twin points of light hovered near the sun in the center. Small arcs of rainbows also shown through each sun dog. Sun dogs are created when high altitude cold air and ice crystals are present in cirrus clouds, along with the proper angle. They typically are seen in the winter months, but can occur anytime. – Lori Hall photo
