It was a day short of the New Year, but the moment (and the baby) finally arrived! The first baby born in Palo Alto County in 2011 is Jerry Thomas Schrieber. Little Jerry arrived at the Palo Alto County Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 2, at 6:25 a.m. He weighed in at seven pounds, three and one-half ounces and measured 20 inches in length.

The Schrieber baby beat out another newborn, who arrived on New Year’s Eve, as Palo Alto County’s New Year’s Baby. The little boy is the first child of Ray and Hilary Schrieber of Emmetsburg.

Mom Hilary works at Brand FX in Pocahontas. Dad Ray is employed at Architectural Arts in Emmetsburg.

Grandparents are Sandy Schrieber and the late Jerry Schrieber of Emmetsburg, and Jodie and Tom Leuer of Mallard. Great grandparents include Ray Schellenburg from Anita, Don and Jean Paulsen of Spencer, and Gerry and Ann Leuer from Mallard.

“We were kind of surprised that he arrived when he did,” said Hilary. “He was early. The doctor kept changing my due date. First, he was due on January 16th, then he was due on the 22nd.”

As the first baby born in 2011 in Palo Alto County, the Schrieber family was presented with gifts from local businesses. Contributing businesses include: A Heavenly Celebration, K. Jackson & Co., Sol Salon, Hughes Pharmacy, The Glass Shop, Main Street Memories Mall, Pizza Ranch, Saxton’s Greenhouse & Flowers, Emmetsburg Reporter & Democrat, Emmetsburg Care Center and Emerald Oaks, Nelson’s Cabinn, Creative Stitches, Iowa Lakes Community College, Iowa Lakes Foundation, Wild Rose Casino & Resort, Iowa Trust & Savings Bank, Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce, and others.
