John & Bernie Kenyon Named 2010 Niman Ranch Farmers of the Year
Each year, one farmer or farm family is given the honor of being named Niman Ranch’s Farmers of the Year. This recognition goes to a person or people who have stood out over the years for not only the excellence with which they raise their hogs or manage their farm, but also for the contributions they have made to Niman Ranch’s success. The 2010 Niman Ranch Farmers of the Year are John and Bernie Kenyon of Mallard.
The Kenyons are long-time Niman Ranch farmers, and began marketing pigs to Niman Ranch in 2000. They farrow approximately 55 sows annually and market approximately 800-900 market hogs per year to Niman Ranch on their diversified farm. Since joining the company almost a decade ago, the Kenyons have become an invaluable partner to Niman Ranch.
“We appreciate the Kenyon family for so many reasons,” said Lori Lyon, Field Operations Manager for Niman Ranch. “John and Bernie serve as role models to other farmers by the extremely high husbandry and management practices they use to raise their hogs. They take special care to perfect nearly everything they do and we are always proud to show off their operation to others. They Kenyons have always been gracious hosts to many farm tours and Niman Ranch customers over the years and have taught many people the basics of raising outdoor hogs.”
The Kenyons and other Niman Ranch farmers were honored on Sept. 18, when they were treated to a gourmet meal prepared by a team of celebrity chefs. The event gave the farmers the opportunity to feast on their pork, just as diners would in some of the finest gourmet restaurants in the U.S.
