Pay It Forward With Gifting Grain

By Staff | Sep 23, 2010

Horizons Unlimited is appealing to area farmers to consider the benefits of gifting grain.

“When grain is delivered to a local elevator by the farmer, they can designate how many bushels they would like to donate to Horizons Unlimited. That grain is immediately sold by Horizons Unlimited and receive a check from the elevator.

This type of donation potentially has significant donor benefits since the farmer actually saves money by not having to pay additional taxes or count the donated grain as income. It is recommended that anyone considering such a donation consult his or her tax advisor for details on specific tax savings.

“We understand the economic times that we are in and the effect it has on community members,” said Sonya Dettmann, Development Coordinator at Horizons Unlimited. “The community members that benefit from Horizons Unlimited services are some of the most vulnerable and they rely on your generous support and acts of kindness.”

Horizons Unlimited has become one of the larger employers in Palo Alto County. They serve almost 90 individuals and employ almost 90 part time and full time staff. Immediate needs include continued updating of the residential facilities and the recycling area needs a skid loader, fork lift and pickup truck.

“We appreciate your consideration of a donation,” said Dettmann. “Help make a difference in the life of some one else.”

Those who would like to donate and those with questions can contact Sonya Dettmann, Development Coordinator, at 712-852-2211 or by e-mail at devcoord@ncn.net.
