Bully Bullhead Celebration This Weekend

RUTHVEN – It’s time for Bully Bullhead Weekend for the Ruthven – Lost Island Lake community once again. This year’s celebration will be held July 9-11. Each day is jam-packed with fun family-friendly events!

Friday, July 9

On Friday, July 9, the celebration kicks-off at 8 a.m. with a Tractor Ride from the Ruthven Community Care Center; register at 7 p.m.  Sacred Heart Catholic Church will be holding an 8 a.m. mass, as well.

Stop by Iowa State Bank between 4 and 6 p.m. for the Hot Dog Feed. The Citizen of the Year Presentation will follow at 5:40 p.m.

For the athletes among us, check out 4-8 Grade Co-ed 3 on 3 Basketball at Centennial Park at 5 p.m., the Kids Pedal Pull west of the Catholic Church at 6 p.m., or the Teen Swim from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Ruthven Centennial Pool.

Bully’s Bar & Grill will be hosting Karaoke beginning at 8 p.m.

Saturday, July 10

Saturday dawns bright and early at 7 a.m. with the Fishing Contest (featuring tagged bullheads) at Lost Island Lake. Support the Methodist Church by attending the Methodist Men’s Yard Sale from 7 a.m. to noon and the UMW Circle Bake Sale & Coffee between 7 and 10 a.m. Both events will be held at the church.

At 8 a.m., lace-up your running shoes for the 5K, 10K & Fun Run, starting from Huston Park. Registration is at 7:30 p.m. Slow Pitch Softball also gets underway during the 8 o’clock hour at the Ruthven-Ayrshire School athletic field, and the Bully Bullhead Bike Ride kicks into gear at 9 a.m. (register at 8 a.m.) at the corner of Gowrie and Main.

Shoppers will want to take part in the City-wide Garage Sales, starting at 7:30 a.m. The Antique Tractor & Machinery Show is at the Care Center at 8 a.m.

At 9 a.m., older “kids” can register their classic “rides” for the Car Show, which will be held at the corner of Gowrie and Railroad Streets between noon and 4 p.m. The Burn Out Car Show will start at 4:30 p.m.

The younger set will have the chance to try the Tiki Island Climbing Wall at Gowrie and Main starting at 8 a.m., as well the Free Kids’ Entertainment with inflatables from 9 a.m. to noon at the Iowa State Bank parking lot. Kids’ Entertainment is sponsored by the Ruthven Community Care Center.

The Lost Island-Ruthven Express Train will be giving rides from Iowa State Bank from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Pony and Wagon Rides will be given at the corner of Main and Stewart between 3:30 and 4 p.m.

Get your face painted prior to the parade at Mad Butcher starting at 12:30 p.m. then line up for the parade between 12:30 and 1 p.m. on Old Highway 18. The annual Parade will get underway at 1:30 p.m.

Food is always a part of any celebration, and there are many options from which to choose. Try the mini donuts, snow cones, and drinks at the corner of Gowrie and Main (serving begins at 8 a.m.), the UMW Circle Ice Cream & Pie at the Social Center from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., or the Turkey Fillet Feed (including Brats) at 1201 Gowrie St. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Local history buffs will want to stop by the Ruthven Library for the Ruthven History Slide Show with Sandra Dvorsky between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Friends of the Library will also be holding a Used Book Sale at this time.

Several Ruthven businesses will be having open houses on Saturday, including Picket Fence, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Relativity T’s/Body Works Vinyl Graphics, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Lost Island-Huston Park Nature Center will also be open between 1 and 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

After the parade, Centennial Pool opens with just a $1 admission charged. Young people in grades 9-12 can participate in the 3-3 Co-ed Basketball games at Centennial Park, as well.

At 5 p.m., join in Sacred Heart Catholic Church services or a Worship Service at Holy Cross at Lost Island.

Saturday wraps up with a Campfire Activity and S’mores at the Lost Island Nature Center at 8 p.m. and the Fireman’s Street Dance (on Gowrie St. by Bully’s) featuring The Chocolate Crackers between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Sunday, July 11

Start the final day of the Bully Bullhead celebration by enjoying the Pancake & Sausage Breakfast at the American Legion Hall from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Auxiliary Ladies will be holding a Bake Sale.

Don’t forget to attend worship services at your church of choice on Sunday morning. Services begin at 9 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church and at Ruthven United Methodist Church. Sacred Heart Catholic Church will begin services at 10 a.m., and Lost Island Lutheran Church will start their service at 10:30 a.m.

All ages can take part in the Co-ed Volleyball games beginning at noon at Centennial Park. Centennial Pool will be open from 1 to 6 p.m., and the Fishing Contest ends at 1 p.m. at Murphy’s Bait Shop.

Sunday afternoon is a Progressive Organ Recital beginning at Zion Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m. An Ice Cream Social & Maidrite Supper will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lost Island Lutheran Church.
