Celebrating Independence Day
Several events, commemorating Independence Day, will be held this weekend across Palo Alto County. Get out and enjoy the Fourth of July holiday with your family, friends, and neighbors.
In Emmetsburg, Independence Day events will be held on Sunday, July 4. All activities will be held at Soper Park. The Sand Volleyball Tournament gets underway during the 11 o’clock hour along with Games and Races sponsored by the VFW Post #2295. (The games have been moved to later in the morning to accommodate families who would like to attend church earlier in the day.) Kids of all ages can compete in the trike races, balloon toss, and foot races. Free soda will be available for the game participants, families, and friends.
At 1 p.m. the Fourth of July program kicks off with the VFW members presenting the colors and firing squad. Emmetsburg Mayor John Schad will offer his remarks, and the Emmetsburg Municipal Band Concert will perform a variety of patriotic and popular tunes. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the high school/middle school auditorium.
B & B Concessions will be selling hot dogs, mini donuts, cotton candy, and beverages in Soper Park. The day will culminate with fireworks over Five Island Lake at dusk.
The Ruthven-Lost Island community is planning a large fireworks show over the lake at dusk on Saturday, July 3. A boat parade is scheduled for Sunday, July 4, beginning at 2 p.m. The parade will begin at Redwood Resort. On Sunday, July 4, the American Legion will be holding a free will donation pancake breakfast at the Legion Hall.
In West Bend, activities will be held throughout the weekend. On Friday, July 2, a tractor ride will start at West Bend International at 8 a.m. That evening, the Knights of Columbus BBQ will begin serving at 5:30 p.m., and a street dance will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
On Saturday, July 3, the day begins at 11 a.m. with the annual parade. Between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., children are invited to take part in carnival games, face painting, pony rides, bingo, and inflatable rides at the West Bend-Mallard school grounds. Free swimming will be offered from 1 to 5 p.m., and Liberty Games will start at 1:30 p.m. Food stands will be open at the school grounds throughout the day, and entertainment can found on the showmobile stage all afternoon. A community hymn sing will be held at 3 p.m., and the Celebration Iowa Singers will perform from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Following an auction at 8:30 p.m., fireworks will be shot off at dusk.
The weekend wraps up on Sunday, July 4, with Dad’s Belgian Waffles from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the West Bend Community Center.
