School Board Fills Three Teaching Vacancies
A quorum of members of the Emmetsburg Community Schools Board of Education met Monday, giving their approval to offer contracts to three new teachers. Three members of the seven-member board were absent: Karla Anderson, Laure Egland, and Don Hagen.
Contacts were offered to Danielle Auten for the Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) teaching position at West Elementary, Jennifer Vande Zande for the fourth grade teaching position at West Elementary, and Karen Thilges for the high school special education teaching position.
West Elementary Principal Matt Pugh shared some background information on Danielle Auten and Jennifer Vande Zande.
“Danielle Auten taught for awhile at Emmetsburg Catholic School and then went down to Laurens to teach some,” said Pugh. “She graduated from Iowa State University and earned her PreK endorsement through Buena Vista University. She will have to go back to finish up some classes to get the special ed side of her PreK endorsement. She does have a coaching endorsement, too.”
Pugh continued, “Jennifer Vande Zande is a new teacher. She just graduated in May from Central College. She also has her Reading endorsement, Spanish endorsement, and coaching endorsement.”
Middle/High School Principal Jay Jurrens told the board members about Karen Thilges.
“Mrs. Thilges has 15 years of teaching experience, the last four years at Twin River Valley (TRV). Prior to teaching at TRV, she taught special education at a couple of different schools in Minnesota,” Jurrens noted. “She lives in Algona and has a master’s degree in special education. She’s very qualified.”
The board also approved Jared Pickett as the middle school football assistant coach.
“This fills up our teaching positions,” said Superintendent John Joynt. “We still have some coaching vacancies remaining, and we’re working on that.”
In other business, the board approved two resolutions regarding the transfer of the old Middle School property. The first resolution is to execute the quit claim deed for the old Middle School football field on 11th Street, which continues the transfer of the field to the City of Emmetsburg. The second resolution is to authorize the delivery of the quit claim deed.
