Emmetsburg Public And Catholic Schools To Offer Preschool

By Staff | May 11, 2010

Emmetsburg Community Schools, in collaboration with Emmetsburg Catholic School’s Little Irish Preschool program, will hold registration for a joint four-year old preschool for the 2010-11 school year.

Funding for the preschool is provided by a grant from the Iowa Department of Education.

“Recently, the State announced that they would award preschool grants to all who applied,” explained Emmetsburg West Elementary Principal Matt Pugh. “Previously, the grants had been competitive. We’ll have to go through this grant process for the first year, but after that, the preschool students will be counted at 60-percent of what our K-12 kids are.”

“We’ll be collaborating with the Early Childhood Special Education teacher and transition with the preK classroom, as well as the Catholic School’s Little Irish Preschool,” said Amy Thompson, Kindergarten teacher at the West Elementary. “In the future, we’ll be collaborating with HeadStart and any other preschools in the area.”

Thompson added that a creative curriculum will be taught according to quality preschool program standards.

The preschool program (at both West Elementary and Emmetsburg Catholic) will be conducted half-days Tuesday through Friday with a morning session (8 to 11 a.m.) and an afternoon session (noon to 3 p.m.). There is a cap of 20 students per session.

Rita Garrelts will be teaching at the public school, while Sherry Bredehoeft will be teaching at the Catholic School. Both are licensed preschool teachers. Certified aides will assist in the classrooms.

Registration for these preschools will be held on Wednesday, May 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at West Elementary School and Emmetsburg Catholic School. This is a free preschool program; however, a one-time registration fee of $25 will be charged.

All students planning to attend the preschool must be four-years of age on or before Sept. 15, 2010.

“Any four-year old child in the area can attend,” Pugh noted. “They don’t have to open enroll into the district.”
