St. Pat’s — Then &?Now

By Staff | Mar 18, 2010
In 1962 a group of Emmetsburg Irishmen got busy with broom and shovels to clear snow from the city’s newly acquired Blarney stone in preparation for the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. The newspaper identified the group to include (from the left) John McCain, Bill Degnan, Dan Conlon, Dan Brown, Bob O’Leary, Maurice Brennan, Jerry Foy, Marion Conlon, Herb Doyle, John Brennan, Bill Kerwick and Gary Girard. It appears some of the men in the photo were not identified.
In 2010, the task was re-enacted when a group shoveled a path to Robert Emmet and the Blarney Stone. Pictured (from the left) are Andy Joyce; Tim McCain, son of the late John McCain; Jack Nolan, son of the late John Nolan; and Connie McPherson, daughter of the late Gary Girard. -- Jane Whitmore photo

In 1962 a group of Emmetsburg Irishmen got busy with broom and shovels to clear snow from the city’s newly acquired Blarney stone in preparation for the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. This was before the “official”?Blarney stone arrived in 1965 as a gift from the people of Ireland. The newspaper identified the group to include John McCain, Bill Degnan, Dan Conlon, Dan Brown, Bob O’Leary, Maurice Brennan, Jerry Foy, Marion Conlon, Herb Doyle, John Brennan, Bill Kerwick and Gary Girard.

In 2010, the task was re-enacted when a group shoveled a path to Robert Emmet and the Blarney Stone. Taking up shovels were Andy Joyce; Tim McCain, son of the late John McCain; Jack Nolan, son of the late John Nolan; and Connie McPherson, daughter of the late Gary Girard. The majority of the mountains of snow have melted since this photo was taken.

May “Irish Eyes” be smiling on this week’s 50th Anniversary St. Patrick’s Celebration.
