Dan Voigt Receives Media Award
Dan Voigt was the recipient of the Iowa High School Athletic Association News Media Award last weekend. The award was presented during the 90th high school state wrestling meet at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
“We’re pleased to have Dan receive the Iowa High School Athletic Association Media Award,”?said Dan McCain, General Manager of The Reporter and The Democrat. “Dan is most deserving of this award. He gives an all-out effort to his job as Sports Editor and does an outstanding job. He is always willing to jump in and help at every venue he covers. It’s not unusual for him to announce a game, keep score, verify rules and take photos all at the same event. You will also see Dan at State Iowa Newspaper Football meetings lobbying for area athletes to receive honors. We’re fortunate to benefit from his dedication as are the area high school athletes he covers.”
Voigt is a 23-year veteran at The Reporter and The Democrat where he is sports editor and IT coordinator.
“I’m humbled to be chosen for this award. I’ve just enjoyed working with the coaches, student athletes, administrators and fans over the years” said Voigt. “To me, this award really can’t go to any one person – I’ve only been able to do my job because of the support and assistance of my co-workers at The Reporter and The Democrat over the years. I owe them and my family, as well as everyone, a heartfelt ‘thank you.'”
Voigt’s pictures, features and game reports provide the best of game and human interest coverage. He has been active in the Iowa Newspaper Association, serving on all-state committees. He is also one of the original members of the Iowa Newspaper Association state wrestling photo pool.
Dan Voigt is a graduate of Iowa Lakes community College. He worked as managing editor of the Graettinger Times for three years and he worked at Estherville Daily News before taking the reins of sports reporting for The Reporter and The Democrat. He also worked for radio stations KICD in Spencer and KILR in Estherville, and he was a communication specialist for the Storm Lake Division of the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
In addition, Voigt is active in county organizations. He currently serves as treasurer for the Palo Alto County Fair Board. In 2008 he was inducted into the Iowa 4-H?Hall of Fame.
“The Iowa High School Athletic Association’s News Media award for excellence carries with it the nomination from one of our member schools,” said Richard Wulkow, IHSAA Executive Director. “That alone is an excellent compliment and should be a source of pride for all of our award winners. It is obvious to us that Dan’s work serves to enhance the educational athletic experience of students in his community as well as the other school activities he covers.”
The presentation to Dan Voigt was made during the Wrestling Awards Ceremony on center mat prior to the Grand March and Championship matches Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
