The Woes Of Winter
Emmetsburg Municipal Utilities fixed another break in a water main Tuesday. This one was on Monroe, just north of where it intersects with Main Street (Highway 18). Because the frost is so deep, it took time to get to the source of the problem. Cold weather and aging infrastructure contributed to the cause of the break, along with sand which was used as fill and allows the pipes to shift in the cold. A Bobcat with hammer attacked the street. Once the source of the leak was unearthed, a sleeve was placed over the four-inch cast iron water main. The EMU crew filled in the work area on Monroe Street. This is the fourth water main break this winter.
