Old Man Winter Arrives

By Staff | Dec 10, 2009

OLD MAN WINTER blew up quite a storm Tuesday night. Amounts of snow varied from six inches and up to nearly a foot. Then the north wind blew, drifting snow across the plains of Northwest Iowa. Again, some places were more heavily drifted than others. In the photo, the state plow heads south on Broadway. School dismissed early on Tuesday and was cancelled for the day on Wednesday. City workers battled drifts in town. State and county workers encountered drifts in excess of six feet tall on some rural roads. The wind continued to blow with gusts over 40 mph throughout the day on Wednesday, whipping the light snow around the countryside. Drivers were encouraged to stay home and off the roads until the storm subsides. This is the first blizzard of winter making its appearance in Palo Alto County. -- Jane Whitmore photo
