County Teams Advance To First Round Playoff Games
The 2009 football playoff trail continues Monday night, Nov. 2, for the three Palo Alto County schools that qualified for the post season.
In Substate games played Wednesday night, the Emmetsburg E’Hawks, Graettinger/Terril Knights and West Bend-Mallard Wolveines all picked up victories to earn the right to advance to First-round games.
However, the wins weren’t all as easy as they seemed.
Emmetsburg’s E’Hawks trailed through most of the first half of their game with Aplington-Parkersburg in Emmetsburg, but tied the game at 7-7 just before halftime. A scoreless second half would ensue, requiring an overtime to determine the outcome. The E’Hawks would play great defense in the overtime, and then got a one-yard bulldozer rush by Tommy Kuecker into the endzone to earn the 13-7 win over the Falcons.
Emmetsburg will host South Winneshiek in Class 1A playoff action Monday night at Duane Twait Field in Emmetsburg. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Graettinger/Terril simply ran away from the Woodbine Tigers, claiming a 62-25 win at Woodbine in Eight-man action. With the win, Graettinger/Terril will meet up with district foe North Sentral Kossuth Monday night at Swea City in the 7 p.m. contest.
West Bend-Mallard had a good battle with Remsen St. Mary’s at Remsen on Wednesday night, but came up with some good defensive efforts to take a 44-36 win over St. Mary’s. Next up for the Wolverines will be a short trip up Highway 15 to meet up with district foe Armstrong-Ringsted on Monday night at Armstrong. Game time will be 7 p.m.
