Harvest Fest celebrates a bountiful harvest season. Emmetsburg Retail Association invites the public to celebrate with them this weekend.

Harvest Fest says “Thank You” to the community with a celebration at the VFW Hall. Lunch will be served Saturday, Oct. 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Enjoy chili, build your own hot dog, and cinnamon rolls. A free will offering will be accepted with proceeds going to the Upper Des Moines Opportunity Fuel Assistance program.

But the day begins long before the lunch. First there is the Salsa Contest. Anyone who has made their own salsa is invited to bring their tomato creation for judging. Who has the best salsa? A minimum of one pint of salsa is required to participate. Bring the salsa to the VFW between 8 and 9 a.m. Saturday. Winners will be announced later that morning and stained glass prizes, crafted by Lee Beem, will be awarded. To participate, call Amy Martini at 852-2222 or leave a message at 852-2307.

Holiday Discount Buttons will be sold at a discounted price on Saturday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the VFW. Shoppers have the opportunity to use the buttons for Early Button Discount Specials Oct. 17 through Oct. 24. Specials are listed in advertising on page 6 of The Reporter.

Shop-portunity Grand Prize drawings will be held shortly before 1 p.m. at the VFW. Customers receive one shop-portunity ticket for every $5 spent in-store now through Oct. 16. Bring the tickets to the VFW on Saturday and be eligible to win $50 in Retail Bucks. Five lucky winners will be drawn.

Enjoy the day at the VFW. Seven pies will be given away. Every 15 minutes a winner will be announced. The pies are made by Ardelle Conner. There will be contests, too: guess the weight of the pumpkin; guess how many candy corns are in the dish. Entertainment at the VFW will be provided by Dan Voigt.
