Martin-Mattice Adds To Staff

By Staff | Jul 23, 2009

Justin Kahler has joined the staff at Martin-Mattice Funeral Home.

“Justin is a welcome addition to the firm,” said Alan Mattice, owner and operator of Martin-Mattice Funeral Homes in Emmetsburg and Ruthven.

Justin and Katie Kahler, with six-month-old Vivian, moved to Emmetsburg in June. They previously lived in Humboldt.

Justin is a native of Humboldt. He received his mortuary science degree from Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny. In fact, he was in the second graduating class of the program. Justin returned to Humboldt to do his internship with Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home and remained on the staff after obtaining his license.

“This is an interesting field,” Kahler said. “There is a lot of history, how the field has evolved since the Civil War. A lot of funeral directors were wood workers and others were in the furniture business.

“I find this to be a really rewarding job, helping families in a time of need,” he added. “You really learn a lot about families and the community.

Justin and Katie met while attending college. Katie grew up in Mason City and graduated from the University of Iowa in 2005 with a degree in communication. She completed an internship in Washington, D.C., then returned to Iowa. Katie continues to work part-time for the City of Fort Dodge as grant writer and government liaison.

The Kahlers chose Emmetsburg because it is similar in size to Humboldt, and they find the towns to be very similar. The young family likes a smaller community.

“This is a very friendly community,” says Justin. “Everybody comes up and introduces themselves. There is a lot to do and so many parks. We knew we wanted to raise Vivian in a small town.

The young family chose a home close to the lake and close to city parks, with young children in the neighborhood.

“Working with the Mattices is a good fit,” said Kahler. “This is a nice, family operated business.

Alan and Tracey Mattice have been in Emmetsburg since July 1990, first as partners and then as owners of Martin-Mattice Funeral Home.

“We are very confident that Justin will provide the professional services our families have come to expect,” said Mattice. “We welcome Justin and Katie to our community and our business.”
