Celebrating Our Nation’s Independence

By Staff | Jul 2, 2009

The Independence Day weekend promises fun for everyone this year in Emmetsburg! Children and adults alike will want to participate in a variety of fun, family activities–everything from water balloon tosses and volleyball tournaments to a circus and fireworks over the lake are planned.

Friday, July 3

The fun begins on Friday, July 3, when members of the Emmetsburg Lions Club will hold their Fourth Annual Lucky Ducky Race down the Des Moines River. Tickets for 150 ducks have been sold. Proceeds from the fundraiser help to purchase hearing aids and glasses for individuals in need.

The ducks will be launched from the bridge over the West Fork of the Des Moines River at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Friday, and collected a mile and a half downstream. The entire race typically takes between 30 minutes to one hour to complete, depending on the flow of the current. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third ducks to cross the finish line.

Lions Club members will be on the river in kayaks to assure the ducks don’t get hung up in tree stumps along the way.

Saturday, July 4

Festivities continue on Saturday, July 4, with Fun on the Fourth at Soper Park. The VFW will host kids’ games for youngsters of all ages–tricycle races, water balloon toss, and foot races–which begin at 9 a.m.

Starting at 10 a.m. a variety of vendors will open their booths to the public. In the morning, the Emmetsburg Care Center will have bubbles for the kids. Jared Madsen from Source Massage will be offering chair massages and B & B Concessions from Ruthven will be selling mini donuts, cotton candy, bottled drink, and hot dogs. The Palo Alto County Democrats will be serving up a hamburger plate and bottled water, while the Catholic JAM Students will have pizza, pop, and water. New Hope Community Chapel will be grilling up hamburgers and hot dogs. KW Electric of Emmetsburg assisted in providing electricity for this year’s vendors.

The Sand Volleyball Tournament also gets underway in the 10 o’clock hour. Coed teams should contact Drew Gappa for the double elimination tournament. Three gals and three guys will be on the court at one time. There is a $30 registration fee for each team; all fees are redistributed as cash prizes. Contact Gappa at 712-480-0461 for information or to register.

In the afternoon, starting at 1 p.m., members of VFW Post #2295 will participate in a Veterans’ Salute. Emmetsburg Mayor John Schad will give his address, and the Emmetsburg Municipal Band will play their final concert of the season.

At 2 p.m., the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus will present their first big top show of the afternoon at the campus of Iowa Lakes Community College campus in Emmetsburg (see details in story below). A second show will be held at 4:30 p.m. The circus comes to town thanks to the sponsorship of the Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce.

Capping off the weekend will be the spectacular fireworks display over the waters of Five Island Lake at dusk. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!
