School Board Approves Gym Floor Logo

By Staff | Jun 23, 2009

A change order on an E’Hawk logo, student handbook changes, and staff contracts were discussed by members of the Emmetsburg Community Schools Board of Education during their meeting on June 15, in the high school/middle school library.

“I have permission to approve change orders up to $10,000, but this one is kind of special,” began Superintendent John Joynt. “It’s basically for aesthetics to put an E’Hawk logo in the floor by where we sell tickets by the gym.”

The cost is $4,620 for the eight feet by eight feet logo.

“We had talked about it before and thought it was a good idea, but didn’t know that it was going to be $4,600,” continued Joynt. “I did talk to the architect today and he said that we could expect around $5,000 back from Sande Construction for a bid for locker room doors. We were going to change all the doors, but discovered that all we’ll need is different entry hardware, so we will have a $5,000 credit.”

“What would that eight by eight area cost if we didn’t put it in?” asked Don Hagen, board member.

“It’s already built into the price of the flooring,” Joynt answered. “This is $4,600 additional. It’s basically for labor to put in the logo.”

“I think $4,000 on an $8 million project is nothing,” said board member Steve Pelzer. “It’s going to be something that really adds to the floor.”

Dave VanOosbree agreed, “The time to do it is now. You’ll never have another opportunity.”

Board member Laure Oppenheimer then made a motion to move ahead with the change order for the E’Hawk logo; the motion was seconded and unanimously approved by the board members.

The board members were also updated regarding changes to the elementary, middle school, and high school student handbooks for the 2009-2010 school year.

Regarding the high school student handbook, the board members unanimously approved adding the Grand March for Prom to the list of events that a student, who becomes ineligible because of misconduct, will not be allowed to participate. Other prohibited activities are: student government, Homecoming court, and National Honor Society.

Registration fees for 2009-2010 were also approved. Changes include: Driver Education fees will increase from $185 to $190; middle school yearbooks will be available for $5; Varsity Show Choir rental will decrease from $50 to $10; JV Show Choir rental will decrease from $25 to $10; and the Industrial Technology fee will be eliminated for seventh and eighth grades.

In other business, the board members offered a contract to Kari Mueller for the elementary special education/Title I position and a contract to Elizabeth Campney as cheerleading sponsor.

Kari Mueller lives in Emmetsburg and attended Iowa State University and Buena Vista University. She has worked as a paraeducator at Emmetsburg West Elementary for two years.

Elizabeth Campney recently moved back to the area to be near family while her husband is deployed overseas. She has extensive cheerleading knowledge.
